Jung “Xzi” Ki-hyo has been forced to retire from professional Overwatch due to a medical condition. The Dallas Fuel will be without one of their key players as a result, with the DPS and former MVP finalist having announced the sad news on Twitter.

Speaking on his unexpected retirement, Xzi stated: “Since about a year and a half ago, I suffered from disk, head posture, and scoliosis, and now, my health reached a point where it can’t handle the routine.”

What the Dallas Fuel Said on Xzi’s Retirement

Coming shortly before the start of the 2021 Overwatch League season, the Dallas Fuel have also had their say on the matter, stating: “With heavy hearts, we are saddened to announce @Xzi_ow’s retirement for this season. However, player health will always be our top priority. We will be rooting for him every single day and wish him the best in his treatments and future. Thank you Xzi.”

Xzi will now return to his native Korea in order to focus upon his wellbeing, however the 19-year-old has left the door open to a potential return to the Overwatch scene in the future. In his absence, “Sp9rkle” and “Doha” are expected to feature in the Dallas Fuel starting roster as DPS’. However, it is currently not known as to whether the team will look for a direct replacement for Xzi.

What is the Next Step for the Fuel?

Xzi previously played under the banner of the Paris Eternal, having been an MVP finalist at the end of the 2020 Overwatch League, thanks to his performances with DPS characters. His skill with McCree in particular made people stand up and notice, with his move to Dallas having seen him reunite with three former Eternal teammates.
The Fuel’s offensive options have taken a significant hit following the departure of Xzi, with little time remaining for them to find a competent replacement. The 2021 Overwatch League gets underway on April 17, when the Guangzhou Charge and Shanghai Dragons go head to head.
