The Group Stage of Worlds 2020 is starting on October 3rd and will last until October 11th. In this article, I will take a brief look at who the favorites are in each group and why.

Group A

This is perhaps the easiest group of this tournament.

  • G2 Esports
  • Machi Esports
  • Suning
  • Team Liquid

G2 Esports is the big favorite. And not only because they finished 2nd at Worlds 2019. This team has kept its roster intact and managed to win both splits in Europe after that spectacular result in the League of Legends World Championship 2019. Perkz, the teamțs captain, has been competing for G2 for 5 years and he’s clearly reached his final form. I have doubts that G2 can do better this year than they did last year, but they should definitely survive the Group Stage.

The battle for the other qualification spot in this group will take place between Suning and Liquid. Machi is not a bad team either, but their opponents are among the strongest competitors in China and North America, two of the best regions in the world.

Group B

This is the most one-sided group of this event.

  • DAMWON Gaming
  • JD Gaming
  • PSG Talon
  • Rogue

The top two on this list are vastly better than the bottom two. In all likelihood, the order you see here will also be the final one. DAMWON Gaming demolished all opposition in South Korea while JD Gaming did something similar in China. Their only real rival was Top Esports, a team they actually lost against in the Grand Final of LPL Summer 2020.

Given that South Korea and China are two of the strongest regions in LoL, PSG Talon and Rogue stand almost no chance of surviving this group. Perhaps PSG Talon can cause an upset and take JD Gaming’s place. But the odds of that happening are low. As for Rogue, they shouldn’t even be here. This team was a complete nobody until the Summer Split in LEC. In terms of its roster and past results, they’re much weaker than everyone else.

Group C

In Group C, everything is possible.

  • Fnatic
  • G Esports
  • LGD Gaming
  • Team SoloMid

If I had to guess, I would pick Gen.G esports and LGD Gaming as the winners. Fnatic had a rough second half of the season and Team SoloMid had to pull off a miraculous performance in the Playoffs of LCS Summer 2020 to qualify for this tournament. I doubt they’ll manage to do the same here. And in addition to that, they have Doublelift, who is famous for choking at Worlds.

Group D

And finally, we have Group D, where the battle seems to be over before it even begins.

  • DragonX
  • FlyQuest
  • Top Esports
  • Unicorns of Love

Both FlyQuest and Unicorns of Love are complete outsiders at this competitive level. By contrast, DragonX and Top Esports are exceptional teams from South Korea and China. Unless something completely miraculous happens, these two teams will advance to the Playoffs of Worlds 2020.
