Week 28 of The Overwatch League is finally over and the results are mostly the ones we expected. In this article, I will take a brief look at them and offer my analysis of the situation.

OWL Week 28 Important Matches

Shanghai Dragons won their match against London Spitfire while Philadelphia Fusion got an easy victory over San Francisco Shock. In SD’s case, the victory was fully anticipated. Those who do not watch much OWL these days may still have memories of the London Spitfire from a few seasons ago, which used to be one of the best teams in the league. This season, they’ve been one of the worst. LS is currently ranked 16th with 6 wins and 13 losses. By contrast, Shanghai Dragons has 27 wins and just 2 losses. Naturally, everyone assumed that this match would end very quickly in favor of SD. And it did: 2 – 0 on Ilios, 3 – 0 on King’s Row and 2 – 1 on Hanamura.

The second match involving big teams was a lot more one-sided than I would have liked. And to be fair, I didn’t expect things to go the way they went. San Francisco Shock is currently ranked 3rd in the league and this was just their 3rd defeat of the season. From such a great competitor, you’d expect to see a bit more in key matches like this one. Philadelphia Fusion is now ranked 2nd as a result of this victory, having 24 wins and 2 losses. The score was 3 – 0 in their favor.

Other Matches

Other matches that held some importance during the 28th week of The Overwatch League were the following:

Atlanta Reign vs. Paris Eternal

This was a very difficult match, in which Paris Eternal (ranked 4th in the league) came close to losing. They went one map up initially but then lost two in a row. Atlanta Reign clearly showed in this match why they’re still a great team and why they finished in the top 6 in last season’s Playoffs, in spite of only being ranked 8th right now. But then, strangely enough, they lost to Vancouver Titans (ranked 18th) just a few days after. Some people assumed this happened because of the loss against Paris Eternal. Others regarded this as a peak in Titans’ season of horrors. The team that won the regular season in 2019 and finished 2nd in the Playoffs is now struggling near the bottom of the standings table. But it’s good to see them win a match here and there. The final score was 3 – 1.

San Francisco Shock vs. Toronto Defiant

This match ended with Shock’s victory and it was completely one-sided (3 – 0). With this victory, the San Francisco team proved that the result from their other week 28 match did not affect them mentally. Immediately after losing that match, they went back to winning and will most likely finish 3rd in the league, unless they can win both matches during the final week (29th).
