Former Halo World Champion Anthony “Shotzzy” Cuevas-Castro has been named as the 2020 Call of Duty League MVP, collecting the award ahead of four other finalists. Atlanta duo Simp and Cellium were both up for the award, along with Florida Mutineers’ Skyz and Chicago Huntsmen’s Envoy, however it was 19-year-old Shotzzy who eventually came out on top in the race.

The CDL recently announced the news of the award for the North American star, following the completion of the inaugural campaign. The fact that the rookie picked up the award in what was his first year of competing in professional Call of Duty makes it even more impressive. Previously winning a variety of titles during his time in Halo, including the World Championship in 2018, Shotzzy caused quite the stir when he made his move to Dallas Empire and Call of Duty in October last year.

What Separated Shottzy From His Rival?

With the rookie having faced stiff competition from his rivals in the battle to be announced as MVP, Shottzy eventually came out on top, largely thanks to his role in helping Dallas Empire capturing three Home Series titles in 2020. The Covid-19 pandemic meant that just one of those wins was on LAN, with the other two being played online, with the Call of Duty League having has to make the transition earlier in the year.

How Shottzy Answered His Critics

Shottzy had come under fire from fans as a result of his disappointing performances early in the year, criticism that always seemed unfair given his rookie status, however the 19-year-old quickly showed why Dallas had put such faith in him. There could well be more honours for Shottzy in the remainder of the season, with Dallas Empire having defeated Toronto Ultra in the 2020 Call of Duty League Playoffs over the weekend. Such a result means that the organisation have now cemented their place at the CDL Championship weekend, an event where they will go head to head with Atlanta FaZe. The Winner’s Bracket Finals encounter is due to take place on August 29, with the performances of Shottzy and the rest of their roster, which includes Ian “Crimsix” Porter, Cuyler “Huke” Garland, Indervir “iLLey” Dhaliwal and James “Clayster” Eubanks, making Dallas the favourites.

Having been asked his thoughts on winning the MVP award, Shottzy had the following to say on Twitter: “From the beginning of the year with all the hate and just putting my head down and putting so many hours into improving day to day and have it pay off like this is a special feeling. Thank you for the support this year you guys all have been amazing.”
