In one of the biggest moves in recent Overwatch League history, Seung-jun “WhoRU” Lee has come out of retirement to sign for the Shanghai Dragons. The South Korean flex DPS has been added to the Dragons roster, with the team hoping that the arrival will be the boost needed for the remainfer of the June Joust tournament.

WhoRU played for the New York Excelsior between December 2019 and October 2020, before announcing his retirement after he was benched. He had previously hit the headlines in 2017 when he won the APEX Season 2 and 3 with Lunatic-Hai. Still aged just 19, WhoRU could well be a major asset for Shanghai.

How Shanghai Broke the News of WhoRU’s Arrival

The news comes shortly after Joon “Erster” Jeong’s sudden retirement, which had left the Dragons in the lurch ahead of upcoming matches. Breaking the signing via Twitter, Shanghai posted the following message to its followers:

“We are very honored to announce that DPS Player WhoRU has officially become a member of the Shanghai Dragons. He will be showcasing his talent as an important part of the Dragons on our upcoming journey and battle for victory. As one of the most talented young players, WhoRU has always amazed us with his plays. Now, he chooses to continue his legacy and return to the Overwatch League. We are beyond excited and look forward to his return.”

What the Signing Means for the Dragons

WhoRU will take over from Erster in the backup DPS position. The teenager was made to compete in the Overwatch Contenders scene, having been two young to play in the Overwatch League when it first started. He played for the likes of Fusion University and Meta Anthena. The South Korean has developed a reputation for his play on Genji, however it will likely take him time to get back into the swing of things, having been out of action for five months.

The Shanghai Dragons have 2020 Overwatch League MVP Kim “Fleta” Byung-sun on their books, meaning that opportunities could well be few and far between for WhoRU. However, the Dragons could not have signed a better back up following the retirement of Erster.
The Dragons are currently preparing for a match against the Los Angeles Valiant on May 29.
