The first day of the Rainbow Six European Pro League has already provided us with plenty of action. Secret have overrun G2 and Rogue have faltered against Team Empire. We sum up the events of the day and try to make sense of the results and the performances of all EUL teams.

ROGUE UNDERPERFORM

The meager performance of Rogue runs like a common thread through all of their matches ever since August. After their choke at the Rainbow Six Major, they may have gotten into the GSA Grand Finals recently, but there, they lost decisively to G2 Esports. Now, it was time for them to step up for EUL. In Team Empire, they actually had a relatively weak opponent to go up against.

But unfortunately, Leon “LeonGids” Giddens was the only Rogue player to put up a solid display. He got as many kills as all of his colleagues combined, which obviously resulted in horrible scores for the team. On a 7-2 scoreline, Team Empire wiped them off the server and gave them the worst possible start into Stage 2. Empire were one of the teams that they definitely had to beat. With their matches versus BDS and G2 still on the horizon, they have to really show up against these teams – otherwise they wont be able to retain their first place in the league.

BDS SHOWED UP READY & PREPARED

The winning side of the Six August Major put up a solid performance against Chaos. Their two new additions, Rickard “Secretly” Olofsson and Arif “Next1” Keskin didn’t really perform in this match. Granted, BDS aren’t the easiest opponents to go up against. With a quick 7-3, the Frenchmen secured themselves the victory on Oregon. Loïc “BriD” Chongthep was the top performer on the BDS camp with his 1.41 rating. Stephane “Shaiiko” Lebleu was close behind, which bodes well going into their upcoming matches in Stage 2. If all of BDS’ star players manage to show, the other teams will arguably not stand a chance against them.

SECRET MOUNT THE PERFECT UPSET

After Team Secret had announced their full roster less than a week ago and Peter “pacbull” Bull had joined as their new IGL, they have now taken down one of the juggernauts of the league. On Kafé Dostoyevsky, Secret and G2 Esports faced off against each other. G2 had won the GSA Finals just a week ago, so the chances of pacbull and company couldn’t have been any worse.

The game ended on a 7-2 scoreline – but not in favor of G2 Esports. Instead, it was Secret who mounted a perfect upset and decimated one of the best teams in EUL. Kevin “Prano” Pranowitz collected 13 kills alone on this rather short map. G2 didn’t get into the groove at all, the individual performance of the players just wasn’t there. On Kafé they stood no chance, as pacbull controlled the game from start to finish. For Secret, this is a valuable start into the league and makes us excited for their coming match on Wednesday, where they’ll have to face off against Rogue.

James “Devmarta” Stewart could’t have put it any better. This win over G2 Esports might just be their ticket to staying in the league. No matter how bad they perform in Stage 2, they already have these three points to fall back on. As they’re closing the gap to the other teams, they also inching away from the relegation spots ever so slightly.

On Wednesday, EUL will continue with more matches. Apart from Rogue versus Secret, we’ll also have Natus Vincere and Chaos at our hands. Both teams have made severe roster changes, so we can expect some exciting and insightful matches.
