Peter “ppd” Dager has officially announced his return to the competitive Dota 2 scene, just in time for the start of the 2021 Dota Pro Circuit. Dager was part of the Evil Geniuses team that won The International back in 2015, however ppd made the decision to retire back in April 2020.

After just eight months away, ppd is back, with the American having clearly missed the thrill of competing at the highest level. Announcing the news via the WePlay Esports blog, Dager will return with Sadboys, having previously spent two years with Ninjas in Pyjamas. The cancellation of the ESL One Los Angeles Major undoubtedly played a part in the support’s initial decision to retire, however many fans are now eagerly awaiting his return.

Why ppd Retired from Dota in the First Place

Ppd was left shorthanded upon the release of Saahil “Universe” Arora and Rodrigo “Lelis” Santos by NiP, having been left to compete in online tournaments without sufficient support. Such stress took its toll on the American, which also played a part in his decision to retire last year. However, ppd reflected on this time by stating that “taking a month or two off may have been the safer play.”

Dager explored other Esports and games during his time off, not playing Dota at all for the first month. Ppd built his presence on Twitch, streaming six days a week, helping him in reaching 159,000 followers on the platform. Speaking on his return to Dota, ppd stated the following:

What the Support Has Had to Say Upon His Return

“So, for now, I’m back. I’ll be competing in NA Dota tournaments and, hopefully soon, international tournaments with Fear, DNM, Moo, and Sneyking. I am very grateful to these guys for carrying me and, honestly, I don’t know if I would have come back if I didn’t find such an amazing team to compete with.”

Sadboys will now compete in the Upper Division of the NA Dota Pro Circuit regional League, an event which gets underway on January 18. It remains to be seen as to which other organizations will choose to enter the competition.
