There has been plenty of speculation surrounding G2 Esports’ League of Legends roster over recent weeks. However, the organization has now had its say, confirming that they will be “looking to trade” key members of their lineup. AD carry “Rekkles”, top laner “Wunder” and support “Mikyx” are all likely to move elsewhere, along with Head Coach “Grabbz” and strategic coach “Nelson”.

The news came following a vide posted by G2 owner Carlos Rodriguez, with their roster likely to have a very different look to it in 2022 as a result. Such changes were deemed necessary following a disappointing showing in the 2021 LEC season, however it remains to be seen as to what the overhaul will bring.

What G2 has said on their latest rebuild

Speaking earlier this week, Rodriguez stated that: “These changes are very, very tough to make, and trust me when I say we’ve spent hours… upon hours of discussing internally with the players that stay within the organization.

As a result of these discussions, we have decided to bench and look to trade Wunder, Mikyx, Rekkles, Grabbz, and Nelson, and look to also replace the rest of the support staff. Everything we have done since the inception of G2 and everything we are doing now is to win Worlds.”

G2 reached at least the last four of the Worlds between 2018 and 2020, something Wunder and Grabbz played a major role in. Meanwhile, Mikyx joined the team in 2019, while Rekkles and Nelson were acquired earlier this year. However, with Rekkles in particular having not lived up to his record-breaking transfer, it comes as no surprise that G2 has decided action is needed.

Who has survived the cut?

Adding to his comments, Rodriguez stated that: “It is in our best interest that they land somewhere nice where they can continue to succeed,” Rodriguez said. “We will not be blocking any trades. Simple as that.” It appears that it will be only jungler “Jankos” and mid laner “Caps” who remain on board from the 2021 roster.

Jankos has a contract until the end of next season, while Caps has been tied down through to 2023. While the org has failed to announce any replacements to date, it is expected that some big names will be signed. Rodriguez teased fans by calling the rebuild “very exciting”. With G2 now returning to action until the start of the 2022 LEC season on January 14, they have plenty of time to make decisions.
