According to reports this week, G2 Esports will shortly announce Sergen “Broken Blade” Celik as their new top laner for the 2022 League of Legends season. Despite having disappointed for the Schalke 04 last time around, the arrival of The Boss could well be a major boost to G2, which will be the second LEC team in which Broken Blade has competed for.

It is understood that Broken Blade has agreed a three year deal with the European giants, with the signing having been reported by Upcomer on Wednesday. The German will be with G2 until the end of 2024, with the 21-year-old having made his name with TSM, before spending over 12 months with Schalke 04.

How Broken Blade’s Career Has Panned Out to Date

Broken Blade’s professional career dates back to 2016, when he competed under the banner of Mysterious Monkeys. However, with FC Schalke 04 Esports having been forced to sell their LEC slot to Team BDS during the offseason, he was looking for a new team. The popular top laner has also competed in Turkey, for Royal Bandits and Galatasaray Esports.

During his time with Schalke, Broken Blade played a key role in the org finishing fourth in the Spring Split, with this having been their final position in both the regular season and playoffs. Unfortunately, the team was unable to maintain such form, slopping to 10th place in the summer. They also lost star mid laner Felix “Abbedagge” Braun, who was sold to 100 Thieves.

Broken Blade has amassed a significant following, not only in Turkey, with many fans having tracked his progress since his days with TSM. He has also been able to maintain a good level of play, despite being part of a poor Schalke lineup. With G2 having also performed below expectations, they require some fresh impetus.

Why G2 is Undergoing Another Roster Rebuild

G2 missed out on a place at the League of Legends World Championship for the first time in their history, having competed at the event every year since 2016 prior to this. The org made it clear in October that they would be undergoing a roster rebuild, with “Wunder” having recently switched to Fnatic, opening up a spot for Broken Blade in the process.

The remainder of the G2 LoL roster has yet to be confirmed. However, Martin “Rekkles” Larsson will not be a part of it, having been acquired by French team, Karmine Corp, earlier in the week. It has been a busy period for G2, who were accused of colluding with Cloud9 in order to stop Luka “Perkz” Perkovic from joining Fnatic.
