The Legends of Runeterra patch 1.16 is finally live! As far as patches go, this is quite an imposing one and there’s a lot of ground to cover, so let’s not waste any more time than necessary! The Cosmic Creation set is now official, which means there’s a ton of new goodies (champions, cards, cosmetic items, etc.) for us to break down!

If you didn’t catch any of our previous coverage, make sure to do so before reading anything down below — things will make a lot more sense! With that out of the way, let’s begin!

Legends of Runeterra | Patch 1.16 — Cosmic Creation

  • First of all, Cosmic Creation brings forth three entirely new champions: Riven, Viktor, and Zoe. But that’s the just the tip of the iceberg. These three champions all have somewhat peculiar and idiosyncratic playstyles, so expect many exciting new decks and combinations to pop up over the coming days and weeks!
  • We’ve also gotten 37 non-champion cards, including Followers, Spell cards, and Landmarks. Regions like Targon, Ionia, Noxus, Demacia, Freljord, and Bilgewater all received some attention from Riot. So even if you’re not into Riven, Viktor, or Zoe, there’s still a metric ton of stuff for you to unravel and enjoy!
  • There are two new keywords as well: Augment and Reforge. The former is tied to Viktor, with the latter being exclusive to Riven. The underlying mechanics between both are different although their end result is pretty much the same: empowering your units en route to a dominant victory. There are two new Challenges in the game that’ll introduce you to both of these concepts (“Augmentation and Progress” & “Reforging the Blade”). Furthermore, Riot has added three new Daily Quests that revolve around Cosmic Creation keywords and champions!
Prismatic Card Styles

Patch 1.16 is also introducing Prismatic Card styles — a brand-new way of customizing your favorite cards! You can check them out in action down below:

The good news is that you’ll only need to upgrade a single instance of any chosen card instead of, say, three copies that are in your collection. You’ll be able to do so using Essence, a brand-new in-game currency. Read more about it here.

Region Road Updates

Roards for Noxus, Piltover & Zaun, and Targon are now extended all the way up to level 30! This’ll help you unlock Riven, Viktor, and Zoe-related cards, along with the brand-new Zaun card back!

Bundles

There’s a brand-new Zaun Bundle for those who are partial to the Zaunite region! It’ll run you back 1422 coins, and it includes the Undercity Board, Nyandroid Von Yipp guardian, and the bundle-exclusive Calculated Creations icon! Not the best deal in the world, but it’ll sure go a long way if you’re looking to flaunt your allegiance!

Deck Bundles

If you don’t have the time to grind for all the latest and greatest cards (or just have the money to spare), you can opt for “The Forged For Battle Bundle” available for 2034 coins! (prorated for any excess copies you might already have in your collection) It includes a collection of cards focused on combat buffs and combos that should “make the most of Riven and Taric’s abilities!”

Expeditions

Four new Cosmic Creation-related archetypes have been added to the Expeditions draft pools.

  • Awesome Augments — Viktor and Zoe work together to summon a game-ending “Catastrophe.”
  • Blades and Buffs — Riven and Taric, based around enhancing your units.
  • Augmented Assault — Bonus archetype based on Riven’s blade fragments and their inherent synergy with Viktor’s creations.
  • Vault of Crowns — Garen and Thresh bonus archetype that revolves around The Grand Plaza and Vaults of Helia, two peculiar landmarks from Demacia and the Shadow Isles, respectively.

Closing Remarks

This is truly an exciting moment for players across the globe as we all get to theorycraft and experiment to our heart’s content! The jury’s still out on the meta and whether these new cards have the potential to shape it, but we’re definitely inclined to think so. In any case, we have a lot of research ahead of us!

Finally, if you want to go over the patch in a more official manner, you can check out Riot’s official website! We’ll be back with a couple of Cosmic Creation decks before you know it!
