After the recent CS:GO disaster from ESL Pro League Season 14, in which G2 (ranked 3rd globally) lost all of the Group Stage matches and was eliminated from the tournament, the organization got hit by another failure of even bigger proportions. Its League of Legends team has failed to qualify for Worlds 2021.

LEC Summer 2021 Playoffs Results

The Playoffs of LEC Summer 2021 had 5 competitors that were separated by an insignificant skill margin. However, given the team’s prestige and the fact that it had 3 consecutive top 4 results at Worlds, G2 was expected to at least secure a ticket for Worlds 2021.

Caps and his crew finished the Group Stage in 2nd place with 12 wins and 6 losses and its results against 3 of its main Playoffs rivals had been good. The only team they really didn’t want to meet was Fnatic. Because they had lost both Group Stage matches against them.

G2’s Upper Bracket Defeat

In the first Upper Bracket match of the Playoffs, G2 encountered MAD Lions and started the match with a victory in a little over 28 minutes. But the next 3 games were a complete disaster for them. It’s not entirely clear why Tristana was picked each time after it became obvious that MAD knew how to deal with her. Game 2 ended in just 27 minutes and G2 should have realized that picking this champion again would be a bad idea.

G2’s Lower Bracket Defeat

After this loss, G2 had to win at least one match in the Lower Bracket of LEC Summer 2021 to guarantee itself a spot at Worlds 2021. But its opponent was their nemesis. Fnatic, the team that sold them Rekkles at the end of last season, had great morale and a huge tactical advantage. Not only did they win both times against G2 in the Group Stage. They also won two Playoffs matches against Vitality and Misfits, both of which required 5 games to conclude.

G2 led 1 – 0 and 2 – 1, but Fnatic ultimately won the match. The last two games were unexplainably easy for Upset and his team, who caused a massive upset by eliminating one of Worlds’ favorites from the race. In game 4, Fnatic won in just 23 minutes. And in game 5, they needed just 27.

The 3 Qualified Teams

After a 3 – 0 victory against Rogue, Fnatic had a challenging Grand Final against MAD Lions. They eventually lost the match 1 – 3, but the truly important thing is that they qualified for the Group Stage of Worlds 2021.

G2 is probably wondering what happened and how it all went so wrong for both its CS:GO and LoL teams in the span of just a few weeks. No doubt, we will see the organization make some roster changes in the near future.
