After yesterday’s stacked Monuments of Power announcement, it was only natural for Riot to slow things a bit and showcase just a handful of upcoming Legends of Runeterra cards. That said, all four of them are quite interesting so let’s do a deeper dive!

And if you’re a fan of Freljord or Targon decks, make sure to read carefully!

Monuments of Power — Additional Cards

First of all, we’ve gotten a glimpse at the very first Freljord Landmark. Seeing how Landmarks carry a ton of game-changing potential, this is quite big news.

The Howling Abyss” (named after the ARAM map) is a 7 mana Landmark that has a Round Start effect. At the start of each round, it’ll create a random level 2 champion that’s not in your hand, deck, or play. This effect is confusing at first glance, but it’s endlessly interesting when you truly comprehend its power. You’re basically getting a leveled up champion which, by default, is hugely beneficial and impactful. The downside, of course, is that it has to be champion that’s not in play. With most meta decks built around two champions, this means that four (at least) are out of the equation. You’ll get a champion that has no pre-existing synergy with your cards, but that doesn’t mean this effect won’t be potent or game-changing.

On the contrary. There’s also a bit of luck involved, too. Or, y’know, a lot of luck, depending on how you look at it. Some players are vehemently against RNG in CCGs and rightfully so. Still, “The Howling Abyss” seems like a fairly balanced Landmark. It has a high mana cost and in most scenarios it won’t be worth playing.

In any case, this is an endlessly interesting Landmark that’ll surely find a couple of niche use-case scenarios.

Voice of the Old Ones” is an 8 mana Burst spell. Upon activation, it’ll grant you with 2 empty mana gems. After that’s done, you’ll look at the top four cards on your deck and if there’s any that costs 8+ mana you’ll get to draw it, and then shuffle the rest back into your deck.

Sneaky Zeebles” is a 5 mana unit with 3 | 3 and the Elusive keyword. After it’s summoned, you can Stun two enemy units with 2 or less power.

Crystal Ibex” is a 4 mana unit with 4 | 4. After summoning it, you can grant an allied unit Overwhelm.

Closing Remarks

Overall, Riot didn’t share all that much in this latest Legends of Runeterra Monuments of Power announcement. Heck, maybe that’s even an understatement. Still, we’ve gotten a glimpse at four new cards that are at the very least interesting by design. Because they didn’t go all out today, it’s fair to expect a massive announcement tomorrow. A champion reveal along with multiple new cards is basically a given!

As always, we’ll bring you any updates from the moment they hit the web!
