It is looking increasinsly likely that G2 Esports will sign long standing Fnatic AD Carry Martin “Rekkles” Larsson. The Swede is set to join the European organisation for the 2021 season, having been at Fnatic for eight years in total. The move would see the 24-year-old fill the void left by Luka “Perkz” Perkovic, who lets set to join Cloud9 following his departure from G2.

Rekkles first arrived at Fnatic in November 2012, and while he has played for the likes of Alliance and Elements for short periods since, he has been one of the mainstays for the team over the years. The veteran has achieved a great deal with Fnatic, having finished second at the World Championships in 2018, as well as putting in some standout displays in the LEC.

What the Departure of Rekkles Means for Fnatic

Fnatic will undoubtedly feel the effect of losing Rekkles, however his departure could well be the start of what is a rebuild in which some would say is overdue. Fnatic CEO Sam Matthews has already had his say on the move, thanking Larsson for his time with the organisation by stating: “He’s been a rock, a captain, a friend. It’s a sad change of an era, but all eras come to an end.”

The deal has yet to be made official, however this has not stopped Esports fans in voicing their opinion. Many have questioned Fnatic’s decision to let such a talent move to a rival team, with it looking unlikely that they will be able to sign a replacement with the same experience and skill level.

What Rekkles Achieved During His Time at Fnatic

During his time with Fnatic, Rekkles took the team to five LEC Grand Finals, as well as six World Championships. With Rekkles, Fnatic also recorded a top four finish at the 2018 Mid-Season Invitational, while the Swede has three LEC MVP titles to his name. Rekkles is best known for his ability as one of the top AD Carry’s in Europe, however according to reports, Fnatic gave him the option of extending with them or making the move to G2, with the latter having ultimately been his decision.

We could well see Rekkles go against Fnatic in G2 colours in the near future, with G2 having long had the upper hand against their fierce competitor. With Rekkles away from their roster, it will seemingly be even more difficult for Fnatic to compete with the likes of G2 in the LEC.
