FC Schalke 04 Esports Announces Kirei as New Starting Jungler

Ahead of the 2021 League of Legends European Championship Summer Split, FC Schalke 04 has announced that Thomas “Kirei” Yeun has replaced jungler Erberk “Gilius” Demir. The latter has been benched by the organization, having been promoted from their academy lineup in July last year.

FC Schalke 04 Esports has been busy ahead of the Summer Split, with mid laner Felix “Abbedagge” Braun having been acquired by 100 Thieves. It has already been revealed that FC Schalke 04 Evolution mid laner Ilias “Nuclearint” Bizriken will make the step up to the LEC lineup.

What the Future Holds for FC Schalke 04 Esports?

The loss of both Abbedagge and Gilius is likely to hit the team hard, with the duo having been key members of the FC Schalke 04 roster over the last 12 months. They were part of the lineup that achieved a the famous “miracle run” at the 2020 LEC Summer Split. The team then finished 4th at the Spring Split.

Three of the five players that helped the team in achieving such finishes are still on board, meaning that it is not all doom and gloom for the German organization. Top laner Sergen “Broken Blade” Celik, AD Carry Matus “Neon” Jakubcik and Support Dino “LIMIT” Tot mean that the team remain one of the top teams in the region.

Will We See a Change in Strategy for the Team?

However, it could be the team are forced to change their style of play in the absence of their former starting mid-jungle duo. Speaking on the arrival of Kieri, the organization stated that Gilius’ performances during the LEC Spring Split were not up to par. They added that moving forward with Kirei felt natural. Gilius will now be searching for a new team, while remaining on the books of FC Schalke 04.

Kirei has been a LoL pro since back in 2014, however the majority of his time has been spent in regional European leagues. He did represent Dignitas in the 2016 NA League of Legends Championship Spring Split. His move to FC Schalke 04 Esports will signal his first involvement in the LEC since his time with Misfits Gaming in 2019.
