This is a sad day for Dota 2. The ongoing global pandemic has brought a lot of unpleasant changes to the Dota Pro Circuit and even caused the World Championship, The International 2020, to be canceled. This was the first time in a decade when the biggest event of the year had to be dropped entirely, along with several Majors that were supposed to take place prior to it. But none of those cancelations are as bad as Anderson “444” Santos’ death.

Incident

The Brazilian player was initially treated at home due to a lack of beds. Then, on Saturday, he was hospitalized at an ICU as his situation got worse and worse. Unfortunately, he could not be saved, even though the Brazilian community attempted to help him by raising money to help him pay for the medical expenses.

Player’s Achievements

444 used to compete for PaiN Gaming and took part in 3 Majors. So he wasn’t exactly a total unknown in South America. On the contrary, people knew him quite well. For him to die like this at just 25 is a tragedy not only for his family but for the whole Dota 2 competitive scene.

Implications for Future Valve Events

Until the pandemic is over, Valve will need to be extra careful not to expose its staff and professional players to any risks. Hundreds of millions of people have already received the vaccine and are most likely safe, but billions more need to play it safe.

Gabe Newell, who is currently in New Zeeland, was talking several weeks ago about the possibility of having The International 2020 in New Zeeland. Others suggested China or even Singapore, where the first DPC 2021 Major will be held. We’ll have to see what the decision will be and if 444’s death will have any impact on it.
