ESL One Germany 2020 Group Stage Results

The Group Stage of ESL One Germany 2020 has ended. Eight of the initial 16 teams are left in the race and in this article I’ll take a brief look at how they managed to qualify for the Playoffs.

Team Secret

In spite of playing longer than usual games against Tempo Esports and Team Liquid, Secret had a relatively easy run during the Group Stage of ESL One Germany 2020. All of their matches ended with a victory and a score of 2 – 0. Their opponents were Tempo, YellowSubmarine, and Liquid. The first two of these competitors are tier 2-3, while the 3^rd is tier 1.

Alliance

Alliance had an excellent Group Stage and managed to beat tough opponents such as NiP and OG. Their matches were often hard-fought and two times they had to make a comeback from 0 – 1. Nevertheless, Nikobaby and his squad were in great shape and managed to qualify for the Playoffs of ESL One Germany 2020 with 3 consecutive victories.

mudgolems

After its 2^nd place at a recent tier 2 tournament, mudgolems was expected to do well at this one as well, but few people could have foreseen their 3 W – 1 L record. In effect, FATA’s team started with a loss against Liquid and then managed to win 3 matches in a row: against Cyber Legacy, Team Nigma, and Natus Vincere. The first of these wins was not very impressive, but the last two certainly were. Both Nigma and Na’Vi are among the best competitors in Europe and CIS. And keep in mind, mudgolems managed to beat both of them with a score of 2 – 0. In fact, all of its 3 victories ended with the same score.

OG

OG’s only loss at this tournament came against Alliance (1 – 2). Apart from this team, they encountered 3 tier 2 opponents: Winstrike, Vikin.gg, and YellowSubmarine. In each of these matches, OG won with a score of 2 – 0. Based on their performance up until this point, I would say they are the 3^rd or 4^th best team in the race.

Team Liquid

Liquid was the 3^rd and final team to finish the Group Stage of ESL One Germany 2020 with a score of 3 wins and 1 loss. The team lost to the mighty Team Secret but managed to win against 3 other strong competitors: mudgolems, Natus Vincere, and 5men.

Team Nigma

Nigma had a very rough Group Stage and KuroKy’s absence is affecting their performance in many ways. Nigma lost to YellowSubmarine and mudgolems, but managed to beat Tempo, Winstrike, and 5men. Arguably, their performance has been mediocre and the squad stands little chance of doing well in the Playoffs, where it will meet competitors of a much higher caliber.

Final Two Teams

The final two teams that will advance to the Playoffs of ESL One Germany 2020 are being decided right now. Natus Vincere is facing YellowSubmarine while Ninjas in Pyjamas will play against Vikin.gg. I expect Na’Vi and NiP to be the winners, but anything can happen.
