ESL One Germany 2020 is entering its 3rd competitive day, which will end the first round of the Swiss System used by the tournament organizer. In this article, I will take a brief look at the results of the first two days and then analyze the matches that are scheduled for the 3rd.

Results for Day 1 and Day 2

The first two days of ESL One Germany 2020 had a single upset: Ninjas in Pyjamas defeated a significantly stronger team known as 5men. This is Misery’s team and has exceptional players in its roster, including Ace and PieLieDie. But apart from this surprise, every top team won its match against its weaker opponent. The results were the following:

  • Team Secret – Tempo Esports: 2 – 0
  • Ninjas in Pyjamas – 5men: 2 – 0
  • Team Liquid – mudgolems: 2 – 0
  • OG – Winstrike Team: 2 – 0
  • gg – HellRaisers: 2 – 1

As you can see, there were a lot of 2 – 0 results, which basically means that one team was much stronger than the other. This is normal for the first round of a tournament that uses a modified Swiss System. Because in such a system, the best teams are supposed to play against weaker opponents in the first round and win. But in the second round we will likely see some tough matches and a lot of 2 – 1 results.

Day 3 Preview and Analysis

On the 3rd day of ESL One Germany 2020, there will be 3 matches.

EXTREMUM – Alliance

This match heavily favors Alliance. EXTREMUM is not a regular competitor at this level and their only solid player is Sergey “God” Bragin. By contrast, Alliance has a lineup full of superstar players: s4, fng, Nikobaby, Limmp, and Handsken. Given that the match will be Bo3, I have no doubt that Alliance will win here. The most likely score is 2 – 0 in their favor.

Team Nigma – Yellow Submarine

KuroKy is still not back, but Nigma has such a strong lineup that very few teams can actually defeat them. With players like Miracle- and GH, this team is set for success in any Bo3 match against a tier 2 opponent. Although to be honest, I don’t think that Yellow Submarine is a tier 2 team. More like tier 3. We rarely see them competing at such a high level and it’s not even clear who their players are at this point. This should be another 2 – 0 match.

Cyber Legacy – Natus Vincere

Cyber Legacy replaced Virtus.pro after the CIS squad decided to deactivate its entire roster. There are some good players in this team, such as CemaTheSlayer and Cooman, but the skill difference is still huge. Natus Vincere has RodjER, GeneRaL, Iceberg, and other big names in its roster. Given the Bo3 format, I don’t see how Cyber Legacy could do anything here. And keep in mind, Na’Vi has already proved its value at the recent OGA Dota PIT Season 3: Europe/CIS, where they defeated Nigma and OG and then ended up finishing 4th. This was an event that featured the best teams in Europe and CIS, so the result is highly relevant and allows us to determine that Na’Vi is a very strong competitor at this point.
