The release of Ryzen 4000 processors and RDNA 2 graphics cards from AMD was imminent, but without a concrete release date, we didn’t have much to work with. Fortunately, AMD decided to come forth and start building some much-needed hype!

We now have official confirmation regarding two consumer product presentations slated to happen this October. First of all, AMD will reveal their Zen 3 processors on October 8th, followed by their RDNA 2 graphics cards reveal on October 28th. But hype though these announcements are, many gamers online are claiming it’s a bit too late, given Nvidia’s recent RTX 3000 series announcement. The amount of hype “team green” was able to generate in just a couple of hours was staggering. To say that Nvidia knocked it out of the park would truly be an understatement.

A Change in the Status Quo

The onus is now on AMD to deliver, but they’ll face an uphill battle, that’s for sure. First of all, releasing powerful GPUs for a fraction of the cost was always their M.O. Nvidia, on the other hand, often opted for obscene mark-ups. Now, however, the tables have turned. Nvidia seems to have a slightly more superior product, and they’ve taken a page from AMD’s book.

That, in short, is a twist no one saw coming.

AMD’s RX 5500/5600/5700 graphics cards are still pretty powerful for the asking price, but they run a bit too hot and their driver support isn’t always up to snuff. That was often the case with AMD: a solid amount of horsepower, but a lot of it wasn’t harnessed efficiently. This time around, however, their RX 6000 series of GPUs will supposedly provide up to 50% better performance per watt. That’s nothing to scoff at, if true, but by the time AMD makes their announcement, Nvidia will already have a product to sell.

AMD’s Ryzen 4000 desktop processors will also generate a ton of interest, although the impending GPU battle with Nvidia will undoubtedly take center stage. We have two tech giants competing and trading heavy blows which will, in turn, benefit end consumers the most. An altered variant of AMD’s RDNA 2 graphics cards will also be found in the upcoming generation of consoles; this includes both the Xbox Series X and Series S, along with the PlayStation 5. Both Microsoft and Sony have been somewhat coy when it comes to benchmarks, though. Fortunately, AMD’s upcoming presentation will give us a bit more information to go over.

In any case, these are exciting times for PC and console gamers alike!
