Interview with Sung Sik 'ReMinD' Kim

ReMinD: "I loved this game right away"

The Korean Nightelf Sung Sik 'ReMinD' Kim is one of the best and most consistent players in the world. He achieved many titles, not only with his clans like World Elite or SK Gaming, but also in 1on1. fragster sat down with ReMinD and talked with him about his career.

Name: Sung Sik Kim
Age: 23
Hometown: Seoul
Race: Nightelf
Clan: MeetYourMakers
fragster: Why are you still playing Warcraft 3 and what is it that keeps you going?

Sung Sik 'ReMinD' Kim: This is my full time job and it's still fun to play it. I want to make it through the korean WCG qualifier, end up in the WCG Grand Final and win it before I retire from this game.

What is the hardest part of being a progamer?

ReMinD: I'm not sure if the others feel the same, but I had too much pressure and stress during the competiton, when I failed at my aim and didn't make it to the top. If you are not rich you will have financial problems too. And sometimes you can't meet your friends and family – even though you are eager to meet them – because you got lots of important matches coming up.

Mr. Zotac – ready for action
How much time do you invest in your training if an important event is coming up?

ReMinD: I practice around 10 hours a day.

Do you have a fixed training plan or day schedule like some other korean gamers?

ReMinD: This doesn't apply to me because I don't belong to a big korean team like WeMade FOX. SocceR, Moon, Lyn and the Starcraft teams have those training schedules. I don't have any special plan and just play or eat when I want to.

Insomnia mentionend he earned twice as much as his parents in a month. Can you say anything about your financial situation?

ReMinD: I don't know how much money he meant, but I don't earn that much.

You take part at a lot of european tournaments like Zotac Cup, but when those are held it is very late in Korea. Aren't you getting tired?

ReMinD: I feel tired like all the other Koreans, that's why I try to postpone the final match if it's getting too late. Before I start those tournaments I take a nap or sleep more than usual to be ready for this long journey.

If you could make a wish and add one player to your team MeetYourMakers, who would that be and why?

ReMinD: It would be Soju, but he is in the army now and only able to play the game when he has holidays. He is still so good at this game and has always been my best partner to play with.

He is said to play ladder games sometimes, is that true?

ReMinD: Yes he does, but he has very little free time to play. Maybe one day out of 100.

ReMinD and his friend Soju
You've played a long time in SK Gaming and World-Elite with your old friend. How did you feel after he retired?

ReMinD: It was pretty sad to see him retire, since he was one of the most talented and genius players at this game and I also lost my main 2on2 partner.

You are playing XP-League at the moment and managed to qualify to the Playoffs. What do you think about the League and the fact that it mixes Amateurs with the Pros?

ReMinD: XPL is the only korean league and it's a great thing to have. It's a good chance for the amateurs to gain some exprience and maybe win against a progamer.

You have to face Destroyu in the playoffs. He showed a lot of good games recently. What are your thoughts about this match? (e.n. The interview was made before the match, ReMinD won 3:0.)

ReMinD: It won't be easy to play against him since Undead has an advantage against Nightelf. That's why he was able to win against SocceR and beat Check twice, but I don't think I will lose to him.

Can you predict a score?

ReMinD: I'm looking for a 3:1.

Earlier you mentioned that you are going to retire as a progamer, but didn't say when and why. How long will you keep on playing?

ReMinD: The day I have to join the army will be my last as a progamer, but I don't know when this will be.

You are part the professional WC3 scene for many years now. Is there a remarkable moment you will never forget?

ReMinD: I was playing against Sky in the WC3L Finals and he played so good that I thought I couldn't win, but I never gave up and made a huge comeback. Here you can see the end of it:

Lyn said in an interview that he was kind of sad he stopped playing Starcaft and started Warcraft 3, because he could have made more money in SC. Why did you choose Warcraft over any other game?

ReMinD: I played SC before but it wasn't really fun to play and when WC3 came out one of my friends suggested me to play it with him. I really loved this game right away and stayed true to it.

The WC3L changed its system for this season. What do you think about it? Where are the advantages and disadvantages?

ReMinD: Less games have to be played and it's weird to see the score to be 1:1. But now even the underdog has the oppportunity of taking a point. Personally, I prefer the last season's system.

Grubby, Moon and you are known since a very long time and stand for some kind of oldschool WC3 players. Do you keep an eye on newcomers?

ReMinD: You can see lots of new gosu players up already. Just take a look at XP-League, Zotac Cup, WCIP and other leagues. I can't name everyone, but for example Kimkihyun, Gyunah and Kas are very talented and have great potential.

Thank you for the interview. The last words belong to you.

ReMinD: Thanks to MYM and razer for the sponsorship. Thanks to everyone who cheers and watches my games – I hope you enjoy them.
